The Aftermath of A Fire In Your Home

6/30/2022 (Permalink)

  1. Ask whether it is safe to enter the home. Do not enter if the authorities deem it unsafe. They may establish a safety zone, but never assume a room is safe until it has been cleared to enter. Respect yellow tape and wear a dust mask to prevent inhalation of particulates in the air.
  2. Call and Inform Appropriate Contacts.
    1. Contact family members and let them know you are safe, and unharmed.
    2. Contact your insurance agent. They will be able to talk you through the necessary steps, including proper documentation and emergency lodging expenses (keep all of your receipts!) At this point the insurance company may assist in securing a company to help with clean up options.
    3. You may request SERVPRO at this time for restoration services.
    4. Another call may be to your landlord or property manager if applicable, and to your local American Red Cross who may provide additional resources.
  3. Secure the property to prevent possible looting. SERVPRO is available to assist with securing property/ Board Ups.
  4. If water hoses were used to exterminate the fire, drying your home is critical. It is best to call the professionals at SERVPRO to assist with professional water and fire cleaning. Water can lead to mold damage if not dried properly. Our team is an approved restoration contractor for many major insurance carriers and adheres to the highest standards in the restoration industry.
  5. Seek counseling if needed. Children and adults can feel a traumatic sense of loss, and sometimes need help to avoid a lasting sense of sadness and disorientation after a house fire. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. A house fire is a traumatic event and individuals need to be treated with respect and compassion by those close to the process.

Household Inventory Lists for Insurance Purposes

6/30/2022 (Permalink)

If you experience a fire in your home these items of high monetary value are among the most difficult to replace if stolen or destroyed. Be sure to save receipts and/or take detailed pictures for these high-ticket items. Include them in your home inventory for insurance purposes.

  1. Electronics & Appliances: Electronics and appliances are among the most sensitive and easily damaged items in your home in the event of mishap. They are also among the most sought-after by thieves.
    • Televisions
    • Stereo equipment
    • Game systems
    • Streaming devices
    • Cameras
    • Computers, tablets & laptops
    • Home office equipment (printers/scanner/fax)
    • HVAC equipment
    • Refrigerator
    • Freezer
    • Stove/oven/range
    • Microwave
    • Toaster/Toaster oven
    • Dishwasher
    • Washer/dryer
    • Water heater
    • Power tools
    • Lawn equipment
  2. Furniture: People rely on your furniture daily, yet few give consideration to the astronomical cost of replacing an entire household worth of furniture until it’s gone. Be certain to include in your home inventory checklist the following high-value furniture items:
    • Couch/loveseat
    • Cabinets & contents
    • Furniture & storage
    • Shelving
    • Bookcases
    • Tables
    • Desks
    • Rugs
    • Tables & chairs
    • Buffet
    • Hutch
    • Beds
    • Dressers, armoires
    • Desk
  3. Jewelry & Costly Clothing: Not all policies cover high-dollar jewelry. Check your coverage limit carefully for terms. And be sure to have jewelry items appraised regularly, preferably annually, to ensure an accurate representation of their current price.
    • Wedding rings
    • Watches
    • Necklaces & bracelets
    • Broaches & pendants
    • Furs
  4. Collectables: These items should also be appraised regularly at a reputable establishment to ensure an accurate representation of their current price and the need for additional insurance coverage as they go up in value.
    • Antiques
    • Instruments
    • Artwork
    • Coins
    • Stamps
    • Crystal
  5. Firearms: Homeowners and renters insurance also typically includes coverage for guns, from standard hunting rifles to collectables and antiques.

How Will Your Items Be Valued?

Items on your home inventory checklist will be valued in one of three ways depending on your coverage rules, so be sure to read over your policy carefully.

  • Cash value: Replacement cost minus depreciation (think: garage sale prices).
  • Replacement value: The amount you’d pay to replace your belongings at the time of loss (today’s retail prices).
  • Appraised value: Typically used for one-of-a-kind antiques and valuables, which have been appraised and documented via your home inventory template.

Steps to Take For a Toilet Overflow

6/30/2022 (Permalink)

Flooding caused by a malfunctioning toilet is a very stressful situation. To mitigate risk of damage to your bathroom floors or walls here is a list of steps to go through while you wait for a plumber or water mitigation company to arrive;

1. Stop the Overflow

Remove the lid of the toilet and lift the float. As you do this, ask someone else to shut off the water valve just behind the toilet. To do this, the other person will need to turn the valve clockwise.

2. Mop the Excess

Once the flooded toilet has stopped leaking, you can begin to mop up the excess water. You will also need to sanitize as thoroughly as possible. If it is a sewer damage problem, the water will be more dangerous than typical water that flows through the pipes in your home.

3. Plunge the Toilet

Plunging ensures that pipes are sufficiently cleared and that there’s no extra blockage about which you should be concerned. If plunging does not solve the issue, you will want to pay a phone call to your local sewage company.

4. Call for Professional Help

If you are certain that the water on hand is sewer water, it is crucial to call in the professionals. Your water restoration experts in Edmonds, WA will be able to examine and sanitize (or remove) the affected areas – including floors, walls and baseboards. Don't forget to shut-off the water!

Summertime Natural Disasters

6/14/2022 (Permalink)

While Edmonds, WA does not experience many ‘natural disasters’ it is important to know what kinds of disasters could be coming regionally and nationwide, especially in summertime which is peak season for wildfires and hurricanes. The National Disaster Education Coalition states every person, no matter where they live, should learn what disasters could impact their area (natural and man-made), make an emergency disaster plan, create a list of emergency contacts, make sure they are properly insured and have a pre-made disaster kit. In 2021, the U.S. experienced 20 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters, putting 2021 in second place for the most disasters in a calendar year, behind the record 22 separate billion-dollar events in 2020.

Summertime Natural Disasters: Wildfires

In 2020 the Western United States experienced a series of major wildfires fueled by winds and hot, dry terrain. More than 10.2 million acres were burnt costing approximately $16.5 billion in property damage.

Summertime Natural Disasters: Hurricanes

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active and the fifth costliest Atlantic hurricane season on record. Of the 30 named storms, 14 developed into hurricanes, and a record-tying seven further intensified into major hurricanes. This caused a great amount of damage, again costing millions of dollars in damage and displaced families.

The national hurricane center encourages residents to invest in emergency supplies before a disaster hits to save you money as products are still readily available and not as in high of demand.

For all emergencies it is important to remember the following;

  • The safest and (unsafe) rooms in your home
  • Know the escape routes out of your home, city, county and state
  • Appoint a person to be single point of contact that everyone can call in the event of an emergency. This person should not live in the same state as you.
  • Know what you are going to do with your pets in the event of a disaster
  • Post emergency numbers near home phones and teach your children how to call 911
  • CPR and first aid
  • Preparing now will save you money, heartache and stress should the unthinkable happen.

Residential Fire Damage Restoration Tips

6/8/2022 (Permalink)

In the unfortunate event that a fire should impact your home it's quite likely that you will feel panic and uncertainty. This immediate reaction makes sense as fires can be destructive and bring out an array of emotions. Knowing which steps to take in the face of a residential fire can help you recover quickly and avoid some of the major stressors. SERVPRO of Edmonds has many years of experience in fire damage restoration and is always here to help. To handle a residential fire successfully and speedily, implement the following tips:

  1. Contact A Fire Remediation Expert such as SERVPRO.
Once the fire department has completed their work, be sure to call a fire remediation expert. This individual will be able to equip you with a thorough assessment indicating the extent of the damages. Don't ever attempt to handle any of the cleanups, drying, or restoration processes on your own as this is unsafe and could put you in danger.
  2. Locate your documents
In addition to contacting a fire remediation expert, make sure that you assemble your insurance information and a report from the fire inspector. You'll want to have this information on hand, its oftentimes smart to have a copy of your insurance documents at a separate location, or electronically.
  3. Call the Insurance Company Immediately.
Be sure that you call your insurance company once the fire is put out. This step is important because your insurance agent will work with you to file a claim and determine how much coverage you'll attain for the damages. Know who your insurance representative is and utilize them as a resource.
  4. Gain Permission to Reenter the Building.
Always ask the fire department or another local authority whether you can reenter your home. Officials will clear the scene and give you approval one way or the other. In some cases, structural integrity can be compromised, and you should not re-enter until the site has been evaluated by a professional.

Tobacco and Cigarette Smoke Odor Cleaning

6/8/2022 (Permalink)

Cigarette smoke residue is a yellowish-brown, gluey substance that sticks to all surfaces, making it difficult and time-consuming to remove.

The substance bonds to walls, furniture, and plastics and can permanently alter their appearance. Cigarette smoke also penetrates more odor-absorbing objects also known as soft contents, such as carpets, upholstery, bedding, clothes, and many more. Tobacco smoke chemicals are much more challenging to eliminate than those of an actual fire.

To eliminate cigarette smoke odor, you must thoroughly clean the tobacco smoke residue from every surface and corner in the home, this can be highly difficult without a professional. Some helpful DIY tips include;

  • First, open all windows and doors to let as much fresh air in as possible.
  • Clean or replace the air filters, furnace filters, and AC filters.
  • Clean walls and ceilings using products with ammonia and glycol — two ingredients that neutralize odors.
  • Repaint walls and ceilings with latex paint. Use a sealant designed to lock in odors before painting.
  • Wipe down all surfaces in the home: floors, windows, carpets, furniture, upholstery, draperies, blinds, and other household surfaces, fixtures, and items.

If you need a professional SERVPRO specialists start tobacco smoke removal by cleaning all surfaces. This includes deodorizing agents to help eliminate the very tiny particles of tobacco smoke. Specialized equipment is often necessary to remove the very last of the odors that are not accessible (such as inside walls or joints). This will usually involve hydroxyl or ozone generators — professional equipment that destroys particles that penetrated the hard-to-reach areas.

It is often recommended that soft textiles like drapes, carpeting, bedding, etc. be replaced as these are very difficult to restore fully. If you would like an estimate for cigarette smoke cleaning call SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723.

How to Curb Mold Damage

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

A moisture problem can quickly turn into a mold cleanup problem. Mold grows best in damp conditions, and as it is airborne, it spreads easily. Spores grow and bloom into colonies, and those colonies can release bacteria into the air. These tips will help you reduce the damage done by mold growth.

Turn Off Your Air Conditioning System

Mold spores are ever present in the air around you. Generally, that isn’t a problem, but it becomes one when those spores find a suitable place to grow and flourish. Mold spores move through the air easily, and an air conditioning system that moves the air through your property will spread the spores around until they land in the best environment for growth. Turning off your HVAC system will help to keep the spores stationary until they can be properly removed from the space.

Turn Off Your Water

Whether your moisture problem is from a leaky connection, a broken pipe, or flood conditions, turning off your water can only help to dry out your space. Moving water is always in danger of being deposited in the wrong place, and damp conditions are ideal for mold growth. Keep the problem isolated as long as possible by turning off your water at the main connection to avoid spreading the spores throughout the property.

Call a Professional

Mold spores cannot be completely removed from a space because they are airborne. However, a qualified professional can mitigate mold growth to keep it at a normal level. At SERVPRO of Edmonds we use specialized equipment like dehumidifiers to reduce the growth conditions and air filtration devices to remove the excess spores from the air.

If you have questions about curbing mold damage call the professionals at SERVPRO of Edmonds, 425-775-5723.

June Is Youth Employment Safety Month

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Edmonds we are all about safety! Responding to disasters is our line of work and has made us hyper-aware of risks that can happen when least expected. Recently the Washington State department of L & I  (labor and industries) presented to our local Edmonds Chamber and shared some great tips about staying safe and following regulations in the workplace.

L & I shared that June is “Youth Employment Safety Month.” With the school year wrapping up, lots of teens will be starting summer jobs in the coming weeks.
Employers in Washington must meet certain criteria before hiring anyone under 18. Once hired, there are rules for breaks, wages, and job duties specific to youth.

Over the years we have hosted several teen paid internships to gain professional and real life experience here in the safety of our office. Did you know youth under 18 years old are prohibited from performing the following work in the construction industry?:

  • Working on or around a roof
  • Wrecking, demolition, trenching, or excavating
  • Operating or riding cargo elevators, manlifts, hoists, and cranes (automatic passenger elevators are okay)
  • Flagging or helping on public roadway

Helpful Tips for Property Management Professionals

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Edmonds enjoys working with Property Managers and acting as a first responder for their problems related to water, fire, sewage, mold and bio-hazard issues.

If you’re a property manager, you understand the daily stresses that come along with the job. While some of these stresses are inevitable, it’s possible that you could make your day to day duties less stressful by improving some of your processes. Follow these 5 helpful tips:

  • Embrace technology. The more properties you manage, the trickier it becomes to keep track of all the things that need to be done. Try some of the new market apps and software systems. These programs were made for property managers, featuring all kinds of tools that allow you to schedule maintenance for individual properties, keep track of vacancies, record finances, create an online tenant portal, and more.
  • Choose tenants wisely. Its understandable you might be tempted to fill any vacancies as quickly as possible to keep revenue flowing, but it’s also critical that you have a process in place (while still following all local rental laws) that requires certain criteria of the renter.
  • Find a trustworthy emergency services provider. Look no further than SERVPRO of Edmonds for your restoration needs. Our team is highly trained and has experience in a multitude of projects. We are reliable 24/7 365 days a year for all of your emergency needs. Keep us on speed dial; 425-775-5723.
  • Don’t Procrastinate. Don’t let that leaky toilet wait until next week, don’t wait until next month to look for a plumber or see about fixing that nasty pothole or roof leak. Address problems as they occur to avoid chaos in the future.
  • Engage with your clients. Client engagement is key to maintaining good relationships with your tenants. Some landlords or property managers are very hands off – and that can be a plus for some tenants. However, we can guarantee you that just about every tenant will want you to be hands-on when they’re experiencing an issue or have a complaint. Make your tenants aware that you’re easy to reach and let your vendors be your eyes and ears!

Commercial Property Maintenance Tips

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial properties of every type and size have one thing common: The need for regular maintenance. If you don’t take the time to perform routine checks of your property, some things that might be a minor problem now could turn into a full-blown emergency later and In that case you may be calling SERVPRO of Edmonds. Here are some tips for what to include in your property’s routine maintenance, which could save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

  • Inspect your roof. Rain, wind and clogged gutters can wreak havoc. To perform an internal roof inspection, check the attic and ceilings for leaks, stains, rot, or any signs of daylight. Externally check all vents to make sure they still fit, look for signs of standing water, and whether HVAC hoses and pipes show gaps in their connections where they enter your building. Make sure shingles are all firmly attached, not chipped or torn in any way, and still retain their outer coating/treatment.
  • Check your plumbing fixtures. Any exposed water pipes should be checked bi-annually. Be sure and wrap them if they will be exposed to freezing weather.  In addition to costly plumbing repairs, faulty pipes can wreck your foundation, landscaping, and cause water damage.
  • Have Your HVAC Inspected annually (per your unit’s guidelines) filter inspection and replacement will ensure that your HVAC system is operating optimally. If your system seems to be on all the time in the summer, you may want to have it inspected by a technician to see if the system could be better balanced. Additionally, your technician can suggest if the system needs a new thermostat, or even additional units to help with the cooling capacity of your property.
  • Inspect Doors and Windows. Air leaks are the number one reason for cooling/heating energy loss—particularly during the summer when the cold air inside leaks outdoors through cracks, crevices and failed seals. Careful inspection of your caulking and weather-stripping is a simple preventative measure that could save you thousands in excess energy bills.

If you want to stay on top of your building maintenance plan call SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723 and they will tell you more about the Emergency Ready Profile and disaster preparedness planning.

How to prepare your Business for the Fall season

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

What does the fall season mean to you? Perhaps vibrantly colored leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, early morning fog and cooler weather setting in. As the seasons change its always a great time to check in on the health of your building. Temperature and weather changes can affect structures more than we think.

SERVPRO of Edmonds would like to offer you some great advice on how to prepare your business for fall.

  • Clean Out Your Gutters: Throughout the summer months there a high chance your gutters filled with leaves and grime and this will get worse as fall progresses. Clogged gutters can form ice dams in the colder months that prevent your drainage systems from working properly. Then, leaks can happen within the business, causing a multitude of issues. Get ahead by simply clearing out your gutters as the leaves begin to collect.
  • Light Up Your Outdoor Area: Fall and winter means less daylight, leaving a possibility for more accidents. If you don't have lights outside of your home and driveway yet, installing some is a great way to keep your home just a little safer. Lights around the perimeter of your driveway and business or home can mean fewer accidents and even act as a deterrent for break-ins.
  • Check In On Your Heating System: Fall signals the first time in months that you will be using your heating system. Schedule an annual heating system checkup, and manually survey your heating vents to make sure they aren't blocked by anything that could be a fire hazard. Dust off vents and clean filters to ensure everything is functioning properly.

Lastly make sure you have SERVPRO of Edmonds’s contact information on hand if you may have an emergency; our helpful team can be reached at 425-775-5723.

Common Causes of Fire Damage in Commercial Properties

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

Fires within commercial buildings can cause a devastating amount of damage. Thankfully a large amount of fire damage can be avoided with a good, up to date fire system. The most effective fire systems include detection, control and extinguishing. A key part of fire systems are fire alarms and sprinklers, which demand constant maintenance to not only ensure the buildings safety, but also your inventory and save human lives. Being able to identify the most common causes of commercial fires should be the first step in prevention. Makes sure you consider an ERP – Emergency Ready Profile for your commercial property. SERVPRO of Edmonds offers this as a cost-free assessment to help you develop your emergency plans. Call us at 425-775-5723.

Here are the 3 most common reasons why fires occur in commercial building.

  1. Kitchen: Approximately 25%-30% of all commercial fires occur because of cooking and human error in the kitchen. Due to the kitchen being a high-risk zone, this area requires extra caution while using and more prevention. Sprinklers and Fire Alarms should be central in the kitchen and a fire extinguisher should be easy to access while in the kitchen.
  2. Arson: Roughly 10% of all non-residential fires occur on purpose. These fires are the most destructive because they are usually planned after working hours where nobody is around to pull the fire alarm. Some of the most common areas to start an Arson Fire are bathrooms, trash cans, dumpsters and garages. To try and prevent these fires from occurring we suggest making sure trash cans are emptied at the end of the day, keep dumpsters away from the building, keep trees and shrubs trimmed, putting motion cameras or lights in unused or dark areas and installing smoke/fire curtains near doorways. Due to the nature of Arson fires, these are the hardest type of fires to prevent. These few steps are a great way to prepare and minimize damage to important parts of the office.
  3. Human Error: These also account for about 10% of commercial building fires and can be very hard to prevent. Human error could include forgetting to blow out a candle, leaving heating equipment near walls or flammable objects or as simple as overloading an outlet. The best way to prevent these is to make sure everybody in your office knows the risk of what can happen and urge them to be cautious when dealing with anything that could possibly be harmful.

We hope that these tips help your building and employees stay safe. The number 1 way of preventing a fire is proper preparation and preparedness. If you believe your Commercial Building is at risk for any type of emergency, then ask SERVPRO of Edmonds to create an Emergency Ready Plan to help you get prepared!

Training Employees on Utilizing Portable Fire Extinguishers

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

Do you have a portable fire extinguisher in your workplace? Let’s hope so! Do you know how to use your fire extinguisher properly? If not, what good is having a fire extinguisher if you don’t know how to use it?

OSHA requires employers who provide fire extinguishers in the workplace that are available for employee use to also provide an "educational program" for affected workers that covers the principles of fire extinguisher use as well as the hazards of incipient-stage (early stage) fire-fighting. This educational program must be provided as part of new employee orientations, and the employer must also provide an annual refresher training on this topic. In addition, the employer must provide all fire brigade members, as well as fire watches and any other worker who has been assigned any job that requires the use of a portable fire extinguisher, with hands-on training on the equipment they will be required to use.

The most important thing to consider when designing your fire extinguisher training program is your workplace. Focus your training on the type of emergencies employees really may face. For example, an office complex, manufacturing facility, hospital facility, and university dorm should all have markedly different programs. Furthermore, employees with different roles should be trained based on the threats they face and the emergency response protocols that are established. Every successful program should combine classroom and hands-on instructional elements. Many of the basics can and should be covered before allowing trainees to exercise hands-on application.

Trainees should leave the program with knowledge of the sources of fire, classes of fire and their corresponding fire extinguishers, how to identify an extinguisher, how to assess a fire situation, and fire emergency protocols. Here at SERVPRO of Edmonds we practice proper Fire Extinguisher training and we encourage all businesses to do the same. If you are curious about preparing your business for unexpected risks contact SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723 and inquire about our Free Emergency Ready Profile assessment.

Working In Edmond's Long Term Care Communities

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

A topic not always discussed but certainly a concern is the amount of upkeep and care necessary for property (specifically multifamily). A vast part of our population falls under ‘The Matures’, Baby Boomers, Generation X and is profoundly changing our economy, specifically real estate and financial markets. We often refer to these groups as an ‘Aging in Place’ individual or group in a multifamily community. It is necessary that we identify the special needs of the aging community – both the people and the physical structures they inhabit. Special considerations and planning must be made to keep things running smoothly such as mental health, medical and management (financial and maintenance) concerns. Being prepared for the unexpected is key; something we are very familiar with at SERVPRO of Edmonds. We are very careful to follow meticulous covid-19 precautions and even offer covid-19 decontaminations.

Important statistics regarding aging populations and the properties they inhabit:

  • 65% of the nation’s owner-occupied homes are inhabited by individuals older than the age of 55.
  • By the year 2025 there will be 94.9 million senior adults live in our country thus leading to a higher demand for long term care facilities.

The two areas of major concern include the following:

Architectural Concerns for the property; is the property structurally sound? Damaged in any way? Are the energy efficiency issues?

Physical Concerns for the inhabitants; is the resident safe and in good health? Is their unit outfitted with the correct fixtures for their mobility level? Do they have enough set aside for their retirement income?

How To Limit Flood Damage Before A Storm Event

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

The devastation caused by flood water in Edmonds, WA can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to limit the effects of water damage by taking preventative measures. You may have heard about a business in your area going through certain processes to limit the likelihood of a flooded building, but you can also do them as a homeowner.

Know the Flood Level Near Your Area

Governmental officials carry out evaluations to assess how high flood water will rise in a given area. It’s crucial to know the level water could reach during a storm. You can find out the flood level for your area by:

• Going to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website
• Checking with your insurance company
• Contacting local building authorities

Once you’re aware of that information, it becomes much easier to take proactive measures. Get started by hiring licensed and insured contractors to make modifications to your home, so water-sensitive parts of your abode, such as the electrical system, are not as prone to problems from excessive moisture.

Apply Protective Coatings to Walls

It’s possible to buy sealant products to apply to the walls of your residence to help keep moisture out. Do research to find the best-reviewed and highly rated options and invest in some of them before you hear about the next flood threat.

Have a Cleanup Plan

Think ahead by deciding what you’ll do if preventative measures don’t keep the water out completely and it becomes necessary to clean up after a flood and salvage what’s left of your possessions. Because there are so many safety risks associated with flood recovery, it’s smart to contact professional disaster recovery specialists to let them handle the job- such as SERVPRO of Edmonds.

These steps could help you protect your home and reduce the chances you’ll deal with a flooded building. Water damage can be severe, and flood water is particularly dangerous. Flood prevention could also reduce disruption to your life and residence. Visit http://www.SERVPROedmonds.com for more information on storm damage.

Residential Cleaning of Smoke and Soot Damage

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

House fires can be devastating for any number of reasons. Even fires that were put out before they could cause extensive damage or harm can unfortunately result in several problems, including damage from smoke. Smoke can harm many different items in the house and typically leaves a strong, sour smell behind even long after the fire has gone out. Cleaning up the soot and smoke damage can be time consuming and requires special protocols. You can start with these steps:

1. Assess degree of smoke and soot damage to home.
2. Contact professional cleaning services.
3. Continue with home recovery efforts.

Getting the Right Help

Because smoke is such a powerful smell, professional service providers are often required to thoroughly remove it. Professional cleaning firms such as SERVPRO of Edmonds offer special smoke cleaning services. Contact our team and ask about smoke damage cleaning rates. You may find it helpful to have one of our project managers facilitate an in-person visit and estimate for you.

A provider will visit your home and may begin by cleaning soft surfaces to remove the heavy, smoke smell. Curtains, bedding, furniture, carpet, and upholstery can all trap and hold smoke smells; often this cannot be removed by a simple DIY scrubbing.

Cleaning your home’s structure can also be a challenge to complete on your own. Professional home cleaners as well as service providers specializing in fire restoration may be able to help you restore the structure of your home by removing soot damage from various surfaces. The composition of soot depends on what was burning and for how long; some surfaces can be easily wiped clean while others could require deeper cleaning with special products in order to be fully restored.

Recovering From a Fire

Cleaning is typically an important part of recovering from a house fire. Removing smoke damage and soot can be accomplished with the help of experienced professional restoration firms operating in your area.

Types of Storm Damage Restoration

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Storm damage can come in many forms, each devastating in its own way. Ice damming, frozen pipes, hail damage, wind damage, hurricane damage, flooding, and river flooding are all common effects of storm damage. SERVPRO of Edmonds professionals are here to help victims navigate storm damage restoration.

Flooding can be caused by runoff ground water, overflowing storm drains, torrential rains, hurricanes, or extreme thunderstorms. Flood water doesn't need to remain in a structure long to cause massive amounts of damage. Unfortunately, even small amounts of flood water can cause mold or mildew to begin growing in a structure.

The use of a proper flood pump is almost always necessary in situations where flood water and water restoration is needed. A reliable company such as SERVPRO of Edmonds will know exactly which type of flood pump is needed to remove any standing water. Apart from using a flood pump, industrial drying tools are also commonly needed for proper storm remediation.

Hail damage and wind damage are common forms of storm damage that professional home restoration companies are familiar with. Roof damage and roof repair may be necessary. If hail damage occurs, a professional storm restoration company can give homeowners advice on what steps to take toward storm remediation. Roof leak related issues such as roof leaking can be handled easily by the professionals at SERVPRO of Edmonds.

Ice damage can take place almost anywhere with cool winters. Frozen pipes, Ice damming, and other forms of ice damage are very common problems many people face each winter season. Ice damming is caused by buildup of ice around the edge of a roof which then can stop melting snow from draining correctly. If an ice dam has caused roof damage to your home or business, removing the ice dam and preventing future ice damming is key. Ice dam removal may require the help of professionals as well. These same professionals may be able to help with frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can lead to substantial damage to a structure.

Visit http://www.SERVPROedmonds.com for more information on storm damage or to get help immediately and to be prepared for the next winter storm.

Do you have moisture in your crawlspace?

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Crawl spaces are prone to moisture and mildew due to the high levels of humidity and exterior water intrusions in these areas. Some of the most common causes of increased levels of humidity in the crawl space include water leaks, damaged insulation, and inadequate ventilation. To get rid of a mildew and moisture problem in the crawl space review our following tips:

  • Check for water leaks in the foundation walls and crawl space ceiling — make sure there are no cracks that allow water to leak inside the crawl space. While checking for cracks, be sure to also inspect the HVAC ducts and plumbing components for leaks.
  • Ensure that the gutters and downspouts direct water away from your home’s foundation. Water that flows toward your house could enter your crawl space and basement.
  • Make sure your crawl space is properly ventilated — for every 150 square feet of crawl space area, there should be 1 square foot of ventilation. However, consult a professional to determine if you should keep the crawl space vents closed and, if so, find other ways to control the humidity in the crawl space.
  • Use plastic sheeting covers to insulate/encapsulate the crawl space floor and foundation walls. Vapor barriers like plastic sheeting covers trap the moisture that is evaporating from the soil and walls.
  • If your crawl space is already insulated, inspect the insulation once or twice a year. Make sure the insulation is not missing or sagging, which indicates that there could be a water problem.
  • Make sure dryer vents always discharge to the outside and not into the crawl space. If they do this can lead to a major increase in humidity.
  • Call SERVPRO of Edmonds. Our trained and certified mold remediation technicians can diagnose your crawlspace moisture problem and get your crawlspace dried out in no time. Our technicians will remove any wet insulation in your crawlspace, treat any mildew with an anti-microbial solution, dry the wet floor joists or subfloor, and remove and reset the vapor barrier so that you have no more problems of moisture damaging your crawlspace.

SERVPRO of Edmonds is available to provide estimates for crawlspace remediation upon your request. Call our team at 425-775-5723 for questions, we are always ready to help!

5 Steps To Prepare Your Workplace From Natural Disasters

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

Wildfires, hurricanes, snowstorms, tornadoes, and hail storms are just some of the natural disasters that hit the United States each year and unfortunately some of this is due to recent climate change. While it is impossible to be 100% prepared there are many steps that can be taken to limit damage and keep personnel safe in your workplace.

  1. Analyze Your Current Resources

Resource management is essential to disaster preparedness. Analyze what resources are available internally and in your community. Do you meet building standards? Have you had your routine maintenance? What vendors and supplies will help get your back on your feet?

  1. Estimate the Disaster Risks In Your Area

What kind of risks are most common in your area? Analyze and plan accordingly. Discuss what coverages you have with your insurance company to make sure you are properly prepared.

  1. Create A Disaster Preparedness Plan

Assess your risks and follow tips to create a thorough plan for all. This includes updating work safety procedures. Create a communication and disaster plan. Designate a temporary workplace and have an emergency services vendor (such as SERVPRO of Edmonds) ready to help.

  1. Prepare Your Facility

Emergency supplies in the workplace should be stocked and accessible to all. Create a checklist and update as needed. Some items may expire.

  • Food supplies
  • Shelter supplies
  • Emergency lights, fire extinguishers, and emergency radios
  • Emergency kits (Including first-aid supplies)
  • Search and rescue supplies
  • Sanitation supplies
  1. Prepare Employees

There are several measures you can take to prepare employees such as conducting a preparedness class and actively testing out a plan. This ensures personnel is all on the same page and feels confident in the correct steps to take.

Home Inspection Tips: What to Check For When Buying A Home

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

Servpro by house SERVPRO of Edmonds is available for your home inspection concerns!

Home Inspection Tips: What to Check For When Buying A Home

The housing marketing in Washington state and in many cities around the country is currently very competitive with low inventory and high asking prices. Homes are selling for record highs.

Many people are forgoing inspections or making offers, sight unseen. These can be risky choices as some homes may have hidden issues that could turn into larger problems down the road if not properly addressed. Termites? Mold? Leaky pipes? Foundation Issues? Many of these problems linger below the surface and are not immediately visible.

If you are hiring an inspector to examine your possible purchase, consider their knowledge and qualifications. Have them examine the following:

  • Roof Health: this can become a very expensive component and roof systems are complicated and costly to replace.
  • Siding Integrity: Siding take up a large part of the home. Is the siding in good health?
  • Plumbing function and effectiveness: Ensure there are no leaks!
  • Wiring and Electrical: Older homes with original electrical wiring may need updates as technology has changed over the years. Consider the age of the home and what updates have been made.
  • Expansions: What updates have been made and were they done by a licensed professional? Oftentimes DIY projects can turn into disasters later down the road.
  • Drainage: The drainage system, sloping and grading of the home should all be considered. Is the home in a flood zone? Has it experienced water intrusion?

Additional Issues to Consider Include the following?

  • Does the home suffer from pest damage such as rodents or invasive insects?
  • Does the home need mold testing or air quality testing?
  • Is the foundation strong with no cracks or sloping?
  • Do you know exactly where the lot begins and ends?
  • Is the chimney sound?
  • How is the water quality of the property?

If you face any issues related to mold, water leaks or deodorization issues SERVPRO of Edmonds is happy to help! We work closely with real estate agents and home inspectors to make sure your new home purchase is right for you.

How To Operate A Fire Extinguisher Correctly

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Extinguishers Choose the Fire Extinguisher That Is Right For You!

It is important that all adults know how to operate a fire extinguisher. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) believes that children should not be trained how to operate portable fire extinguishers as they may not have the maturity or physical ability. Make sure you have extinguishers inspected annually to ensure they are working properly. Only use a portable extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area. Utilize the widely known PASS method:

  • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
  • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

For a residential home select a multi-purpose extinguisher which can be used on all types of home fires. It should be large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle.

Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher trainings; check out what is available in your community.

Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately to prevent smoke inhalation.

Fire extinguishers are just one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have a home fire escape plan and working smoke alarms. If you experience a fire in your home or business call the professionals at SERVPRO of Edmonds to assist with clean-up and restoration. We are available 24/7 for any emergency!

Commercial Property Maintenance Tips

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

If you are a property manager or commercial building owner in need of preparedness planning for your structure call SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723. We can assist you with a complimentary preparedness walk-through! Check out the following preparedness tips to keep your building safe and hazard-free.

  • Walk Your Landscape. Here in the Pacific Northwest large tree branches and limbs can become serious issues for your roof if they are too close to your structure. Trim trees and bushes back from buildings to minimize risk. The condition and health of large trees and limbs should also be inspected to determine if they are likely to break and fall during strong winds. If your property contains many large trees, the services of a certified arborist might be in order. Check your insurance coverages to see what your policy does and does not cover.
  • Check Your Electrical & Alarm Systems. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, electrical issues, including electrical, heating, appliance, and equipment malfunctions, are one of the top causes of fires in non-residential buildings, accounting for 24.5% of all reported fires. An annual inspection by a professional electrician can ensure your wiring, breakers and appliances are in good working order. Additionally, most inspectors can check your building’s smoke alarms and fire-retardant systems.
  • Inspect the exterior foundation of your property. Visible cracks as well as cracks between bricks, cracks in the mortar, and separation between adjoining walls could indicate trouble. Inside, if you notice windows and doors that aren’t working properly, cracks where walls and ceilings meet, or any irregularities in your flooring such as cracks, warping or sloping, you might be looking at potential foundation issues which could mean water intrusion.
  • Mark all of your shut-offs. SERVPRO of Edmonds has free gas and water shut-off tags for your properties. We recommend placing them on all of your shut-offs and briefing staff or on-site personal how to locate and turn them off. If you have a water or fire emergency or general questions about preparedness call SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723.

Safe Barbecuing Tips from SERVPRO of Edmonds

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

As the weather is heating up in Edmonds, WA more people are firing up their barbecues to cook dinner and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Keep in mind there are several safety precautions that should be taken to ensure your barbecue is working properly and safely. Barbequing can also become very dangerous if you are careless and leave your barbeque unattended. Always practice fire safety!

  1. Check for gas leaks. To check rub water and soap along the connections and hoses, turn on the gas and look for bubbles.  If you see bubbles start to appear then you have found a gas leak and you must repair it before doing any barbequing.
  2. Keep a spray bottle or extinguisher near the grill. If you start to see flames get out of control give it a spray to instantly calm down the flames before it gets out of hand.
  3. Keep items like decorations and foliage away from the grill. Decorations are mostly made of artificial fibers that catch fire very easily.
  4. Never turn on the gas while the barbecue lid is closed. This will cause gas to buildup and could cause someone serious injury when it comes into contact with a spark.
  5. Never overload your grill with fatty meats. This could cause too much fat to drip down and cause the flames to become out of control. You do not want the grill to catch fire.
  6. Never leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute and it could be too late if you don’t notice a fire in time.
  7. Make sure your grill is 10 feet away from your home. This distance includes porches and garages as well.

We hope these tips help you prepare for many days of sunny summer grilling ahead. Remember, if you experience any issues related to a grill fire call the experts at SERVPRO of Edmonds, 425-775-5723.

Possible Signs of Mold in Your Residential Home

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

If you think you have mold in your home the most important thing is to not panic. There are many steps you can take to fix your possible mold issue, such as calling a specialist to come and inspect. SERVPRO of Edmonds performs mold cleaning based off of an Industrial Hygienist’s recommendations.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Do you visibly see mold spores? If you see dark fuzzy spots growing on porous surfaces you could be looking at visible mold growth.

Do you notice a musty or damp smell? Some mold species cause noticeable odors. If you detect an uncommon odor it could be because of a mold issue.

Did you experience a water leak in your home? Places in your home with elevated moisture are more prone to growing mold. If you have had a past leak examine those areas carefully. You may even need a leak detection specialist.

Have you consulted a professional? An Industrial Hygienist (certified mold specialist) will help determine whether you are facing a mold issue or something entirely different. They will provide you with appropriate recommendations.

Emergency Supply Checklist For Your Vehicle

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Edmonds is passionate about emergency preparedness and personal safety. You may hear many disaster preparedness warnings about what emergency supplies to keep in your home, but what about your vehicle? Some things to consider:

  • How much time do you spend in your vehicle?
  • Do you take extra supplies for long trips?
  • What would you do in the event of poor weather, car trouble or a flat tire that may cause you to become stranded?

The National Safety Council recommends an array of items to keep in your vehicle and much of this depends on your distance and landscape traveled. Every vehicle should have an emergency supply kit located in the trunk. Kits should be checked every six months, and expired items should be replaced to keep it up to date. Vehicle emergency supply kits should include:

  • A properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod jack
  • Jumper cables
  • Tool kit and/or a multipurpose utility tool
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Reflective triangles and brightly colored cloth to make your vehicle more visible
  • Compass
  • First aid kit with gauze, tape, bandages, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, a blanket, nonlatex gloves, scissors, hydrocortisone, thermometer, tweezers and instant cold compress
  • Nonperishable, high-energy foods, such as unsalted nuts, dried fruits and hard candy
  • Drinking water
  • Reflective vest in case you need to walk to get help
  • Car charger for your cell phone
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Duct tape
  • Rain poncho
  • Additional items for cold weather include a snow brush, shovel, windshield washer fluid, warm clothing, cat litter for traction and blankets

It's also a good idea to keep family and emergency phone numbers, including your auto insurance provider and a towing company, in your phone and even on paper in case you lose phone battery/power. Equip your vehicles and stay safe- always expect the unexpected!

Re-Entry and Re-Occupancy of Commercial Buildings in King County

5/14/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Edmonds enjoys supporting several professional associations related to the property management and building management sectors. Not only are the associations beneficial in keeping up with educational updates they are fabulous sources for networking among our industries.

One of our favorite associations is BOMA (Building Operations Management Association)

Recently a popular topic of conversation at BOMA has been regarding the re-entry of tenants to commercial buildings. While BOMA does not endorse any specific policy, they discuss a list of helpful considerations for property managers as they develop their own re-entry protocols. Each property is unique and while there will be some commonalities across different properties BOMA recommends each property team should seek their own legal counsel.

Property managers have a difficult position as they should not be required to perform compliance authority with tenants and visitors. While building managers will work to enact measures that encourage social distancing protocols, compliance rests with the personal responsibility each person has to safeguard their own health. Tenants and tenant businesses should remain responsible for all compliance.

Some Re-Entry Protocol Ideas Include:

- Some buildings might reduce entry points, but not if this causes people to gather or jam up at choke points where they cannot maintain distancing.

- Greater security staffing at entry points as needed.

- Installing shielding paneling at concierge and greeting desks

- For some properties, a requirement for tenants to meet and escort visitors or report their expected arrival to security

- Consider an elevator lobby patrol person during peak foot traffic times whose presence will encourage social distancing practices

  • Adding touchless options for opening doors

- Require vendor firms to maintain adequate supply of personal protection equipment for their staff. Amend vendor contracts as necessary.

- Create a cost profile and confirmation within vendor to clean, disinfect and/or sanitize space where future cases of an infected worker having been present are identified. Call SERVPRO of Edmonds for COVID decontamination questions or service!

- Building management maintains adequate supply of PPE for their staff.

- Building personnel trained on proper use of personal protection equipment and protocols

- Social distancing signage in all gathering spaces

- Hand sanitizers in more places with discarding containers

- Air circulating and filtration system adjustments - such as operating at maximum to ensure clean air

If you have questions about sanitizing and disinfecting your commercial property call the professionals at SERVPRO of Edmonds: 425-775-5723.

1. Faulty plumbing or broken pipes. If you notice water pressure changes or hear dripping in the walls, it’s definitely time to check the plumbing. Any leaks from faucets, under sinks or in the walls due to cracked or broken pipes create ideal areas for mold to develop. These places remain damp or soaked through over time, and mold thrives on moisture, so investigating any potential issues is crucial.

2. Flood damage in basements or lower levels. Though many things have to be addressed after a flood disaster, it’s paramount that the flooded areas be handled by a qualified restoration team within days of the event. Otherwise, lingering moisture under carpets or behind drywall can lead to a buildup of black mold growth over time, creating an even bigger disaster in your building.

3. Consistent high humidity. Bathrooms and kitchens are common areas of high humidity, making them prime locations for mold to take up residence. Lower humidity levels by using dehumidifiers or exhaust fans. Ensure they are properly vented. If distinct mold is already visible in tiled corners or on the ceiling, consider mold remediation with SERVPRO of Edmonds to help stop the spread.

Once you know the common areas for excess water to hide in, perform a thorough check. Always seek out professional mold remediation experts to handle the job of any mold cleanup properly.

Handing Asbestos In Flood Situations

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

As with most water damage situations a flooding event can come with its own set of unique problems.  As you review a list of action items to address consider health and safety expectations. One item of importance is the possible presence of asbestos in affected building materials. Water damage can loosen and dislodge other fibrous particles that can cause health effects.

Asbestos has been present in construction and insulation products for decades, with the height of its use occurring prior to the 1970s. While asbestos is regulated today as a result of the risks inherent in exposure, it is not banned in the United States and is occasionally still present in some materials.

According to the U.S. Consumer Production Safety Commission (CPSC), you can expect to find asbestos in the following materials:

  •  Roofing materials
    •    Insulation materials
    •    Textured paints and patching materials
    •    Within walls and flooring
    •    Around pipes and plumbing

While asbestos is relatively benign while undisturbed within a structure, it becomes incredibly hazardous once exposed and airborne. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recognizes asbestos as a human carcinogen, meaning it is capable of causing health effects to those who have been exposed to it. Thus, flooding and water damage restoration activities can displace and disturb asbestos, posing a possible threat.

When conducting water damage restoration on buildings that have experienced a water loss event, in many cases demolition must occur in order properly sanitize the structure. Prior to conducting any demolition or remediation activities, we test for asbestos per Washington State Law. You can reassured SERVPRO of Edmonds always follows proper asbestos protocol to ensure safety for all.

Mold Remediation Basics

Understanding How Mold Is Removed

Have you found mold in your home or are you simply worried about potential mold? If so, you should learn about the process of mold remediation. Mold cleanup is not a simple procedure, but it is reliable so you do not have to worry about dangerous black mold lingering afterward. Getting a trustworthy restoration company in Edmonds, WA is the first step in the restoration process.

The Process of Removing Mold

Fixing the Moisture Problem – First and foremost, whatever the cause of the mold is needs to be fixed. Only moisture causes mold to grow, so the source needs to be identified before restoration can take place. This may mean fixing a broken pipe or installing a dehumidifier. Otherwise, the mold will just grow back.

Containment – While black mold is the only common type of mold that may cause health effects, containment will keep the mold from spreading to other parts of your home.

Removing Materials – All materials that are affected by the mold must be removed. This includes parts of your home, such as drywall, and items in the affected area, such as furniture. These items will be discarded or cleaned depending on how damaged they are.

Cleaning – As the primary step of mold cleanup, the cleaning process is vital to creating a safe environment. Not only will specialists clean your home of mold, but disinfect the affected surfaces as well.

Drying – After all materials have been cleaned and disinfected, it is important that they are properly dried to prevent mold from growing back.

Restoration – All the black mold is gone and it is safe to live in your home again. Once mold remediation is complete, the restoration process can begin. This stage varies depending on the severity of the mold growth and potential water damage. Damaged or unappealing walls can be replaced, new floor can be laid, and new paint or wallpaper can be put in. Visit http://www.SERVPROedmonds.com for more information on mold.

Spring Showers Bring May Flowers… And Leaks!

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are very familiar with wet, rainy Spring weather leading into summer. The harsh weather of winter is over, no more freezing temps, snow or ice is expected. While winter is over Spring classically brings hail and rainstorms, penetrating structures and creating a soggy, wet ground. Make sure your home or business is prepared for the possible rainfall and follow these tips to minimize risk for damage and keep your home dry.

  1. Maintain Gutters and downspouts; have them cleaned, inspected, and monitored often. If you live under trees pay extra attention to the areas that are collecting debris from leaves, branches and needles.
  2. Have your roof inspected; The effects of UV exposure, freezing and thawing cycles, wind and aging materials combine to cause deterioration that promotes leakage, particularly in heavy rain. Roof leaks into the attic trigger mold growth, compromise insulation and eventually infiltrate building materials like joists and drywall.
  3. Test your sump pump to ensure its functioning properly. Make sure the sump basin is clear of any debris. Pour 4-5 gallons of water into the basin and verify that the pump automatically actuates, empties the basin, then shuts off. Outside check the termination of the discharge pipe to make sure it’s not clogged and releases water far enough away from the structure.
  4. Examine nearby and overhanging trees. High winds associated with spring storms may break overhanging limbs, causing roof damage. Weak or dead trees may be toppled, which could strike the structure and cause damages. Cut back limbs that extend over the roof and remove compromised branches.

If you have an issue with a leaking roof or water infiltration due to high rain and wind call SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723. We are always Here To Help!

Safe Campfire Practices to Prevent Fires

8/7/2020 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Edmonds we hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer full of traditional outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest. A campfire can be one of the most memorable parts of camping, and also provides necessary warmth to hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts in the cold. Don’t forget your responsibility to maintain and extinguish flames fully in order to prevent wildfires. Unfortunately Washington State has been the victim of many forest fires and we must do the best we can to preserve our land, homes and businesses.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to maintaining your campfire;

Never cut whole trees or branches, dead or alive. Live materials won’t burn and dead standing trees — called “snags” — are often homes for birds and other wildlife.

Once you have a strong fire going, add larger pieces of dry wood to keep it burning steadily and at a manageable size.

Don’t burn dangerous things like aerosol cans, pressurized containers, glass or aluminum cans. They could explode, shatter or create harmful fumes .

Never leave your campfire unattended and always supervise children and pets.

To extinguish your campfire allow the wood to burn completely to ash if possible.

Pour lots of water on the fire to drown all visible embers.

If you do not have water, stir dirt or sand into the embers with a shovel to bury the fire.

With your shovel, scrape any remaining sticks and logs to remove any embers. Make sure that no embers are exposed or still smoldering.

Continue adding water, dirt or sand and stir with a shovel until all material is cool; if it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave!

Indoor Air Quality Concerns?

8/7/2020 (Permalink)

Indoor air quality can vary for many different reasons depending on your climate and geographical location. If you are concerned about your indoor air quality there are a few things you can do to improve the situation.

A dirty ventilation system is most likely the main reason causing bad indoor air quality. A ventilation system is also known as an HVAC system (which stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and helps air circulate through a home or business. The HVAC is responsible for moving all the air throughout your building whether it’s for heating or cooling purposes. As all of the air constantly moves through a structure it collects pollutants that can build up over time. If your HVAC system has been running for a while with little to no attention placed on it could be circulating one or more of the following: Dust, Pollen, Odors, Dirt or other contaminants.

Make sure to pay attention to your HVAC system and if you start to notice worse air quality, then it should be a priority to get it inspected and cleaned. SERVPRO of Edmonds inspects HVAC and Duct systems on a regular basis and has seen it all! Sometimes it is not necessary to clean the HVAC system, if that is the case SERVPRO or HVAC professionals will make alternative recommendations to improve the air quality. If it is necessary to clean then our SERVPRO of Edmonds team can handle it and you will notice an immediate increase in energy efficiency, elimination of odors and reduce potential microbial growth. Not only is it important to keep your HVAC clean and to keep air quality good, but it also has a great return on investment for both health and saving money by making the HVAC system last longer. If you want to schedule an HVAC inspection or have any more questions, please do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Edmonds at (425)-775-5723.

Mold 101: How to Identify Microbial Growth

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

No building is immune to mold growth. Any event that causes moisture to infiltrate the structure could very likely spur mold growth because the microscopic spores of mold are present throughout indoor and outdoor environments. A flood, broken pipe, roof leak, or prolonged exposure to moisture such as in a bathroom without good ventilation could create an environment where mildew and fungus can grow, reproduce, and inflict dry rot on the structure.

Unless a person notices a flood or leak, moisture buildup might go unseen until an abnormal smelly odor arises. The smelly odor comes from the metabolic function of the microorganisms that give off volatile organic compounds.

Deodorization alone cannot solve the problem because it would only cover up the smell of mildew and mold growth. When a smelly odor persists but mold growth cannot be seen, then mold growth behind a wall could be happening. Mold in a home could also occur inside heating and cooling ducts and vents or behind wallpaper. Visible mold like black mold represents a clear warning sign of mold in the home.

Black mold can appear as blotchy and expanding dark areas on drywall, studs, or under carpet. People need to take signs of fungus and smelly odors seriously. Technicians trained in mold removal, remediation, and deodorization will have special equipment that can test the microbial nature of the fungus or mildew to determine how to treat it. They will know how to assess both commercial mold damage and mold in homes. After determining the species of fungus present, SERVPRO of Edmonds will begin the mitigation of mold damage by first fixing the moisture problem. This can be as simple as cleaning up water from a flood or obvious leak that has already been fixed. In other cases, an investigation might reveal that poor drainage outside is causing water to seep into a basement or that ventilation needs to be installed.

The remediation and structural experts at SERVPRO of Edmonds will address these needs. Drying goes hand in hand with water cleanup. A mold removal contractor will have commercial-grade fans and dehumidifiers to dry up the infected areas and stop the spread of mildew and mold damage. Drying alone will not suffice to fix contaminated materials like carpet or drywall. The mitigation process will require removal and replacement, especially of wood that has experienced dry rot. Structural elements that cannot come out will be deeply cleaned and mitigation treatments will be applied to stop new problems. These efforts will achieve deodorization of the smell caused by commercial mold damage or mold in the home.

Our Mold Removal Professionals have the resources to begin mitigation efforts as soon as possible. The rapid cessation of mold growth behind walls or commercial mold damage is important to prevent spreading.

How To Prevent Mold Growth In Your Bathroom

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

6 Tips For Preventing Mold Growth In your Bathroom:

Bathrooms unfortunately present plenty of damp spaces for mold to grow and resolving lingering moisture is the first step for preventing mold. Check out these following tips to prevent mold growth in your bathroom:

  1. Monitor humidity levels. Just like for basements, the more humid a space is, the more mold-friendly it becomes. Humidity levels over 45% indicate excessive indoor humidity.
  2. Repairing leaks. Considering the significant volume of water being used daily, bathroom fixtures and piping can easily develop leaks. Those leaks will result in moist areas that welcome mold growth. It is important to promptly turn to a professional who can repair the leaks and mitigate damage. Additionally, it is always wise to schedule seasonal plumbing checks. You want to make sure that pipes are in good shape and no hidden leaking is taking place.
  3. Improving ventilation. Moisture can linger if the ventilation system is not allowing air to circulate. Circulation can speed up drying times for residual water in showers, bathtubs, sinks and any other “splash zones.” It is ideal to have an HVAC specialist assess the ventilation efficiency of your property’s bathroom. Ensure the bathroom exhaust fan is working properly.
  4. Replace moldy caulking. If you notice mold growing on the caulking or sealant of bathtubs and showers, our experts encourage completely stripping the moldy layer and having a professional re-caulk the area. This will ensure that the mold growing in the area will be completely removed, thus eliminating the likelihood of leftover spores starting a new growth.
  5. Avoid moisture-absorbing furnishings.Furnishing and decorating bathrooms with moisture-absorbing materials can impact the overall level of moisture. It’s best to avoid wallpaper and turn to a specialist for sealing wood counter-tops.
  6. Exhaust Fans. Residents should use exhaust fans when they take showers or baths. This will allow for condensation and lingering moisture to be removed. Additionally, it’s best if bathtubs and showers are kept as bare as possible. Mold can grow and hide in damp sponges, brushes and soap bottles.

If you have any questions about mold growth in your bathroom call the professionals at SERVPRO of Edmonds 425-775-5723 or visit out website at www.SERVPROedmonds.com.

Edmonds Chamber 4th of July Parade Cancelled Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

For 113 years the Downtown Edmonds Parade on The 4th of July has been a staple in the community for fun family memories and a time to come together in celebration. Unfortunately, the Edmonds Chamber announced that the festivities known as “An Edmonds Kind of Fourth” has been cancelled for the first time in 75 years. This is due to safety concerns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. State and local laws are requiring social distancing and reduced gathering sizes in an effort to limit contact and prevent COVID-19 spread. Many local residents are saddened to be missing the event, including our team at SERVPRO of Edmonds who has participated in the parade with a float for the past several years. SERVPRO employees have fond memories of 2019 when we were awarded ‘most creative’ float by the Edmonds Chamber with our “Underwater’ theme (very fitting for our industry).

It is with a heavy heart that we miss out on parade participation this year, though we understand it is absolutely necessary to limit the spread of COVID-19 and keep the community safe. We miss seeing our community friends, neighbors and partners and we wish everyone a healthy and safe Fourth of July holiday. Remember to practice firework and barbecue safety. Call SERVPRO of Edmonds at 425-775-5723 if you have any fire or water issues as we will be open on the holiday, 24/7 as usual!

What To Do If You Have Fire Damage

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage in a house or building fire can be completely devastating, and the cleanup process is not easy. DIY fire damage restoration is never advised due to the complex and difficult cleaning process that is required after a fire. Smoke damage and soot damage occur after fires and the remedies are all included as part of the fire cleanup process. If you have suffered from a fire in home or fire in your business, make sure you call a professional restoration company to help you board up the area and deal with the aftermath, get rid of the smoke smell, and help with any other aspect of home or commercial fire damage. Here is what you should do in the event that you have smoke damage, soot damage, or fire damage.

1. Don't Enter Your Home
Fire damage doesn't just create a smoke smell or soot smell, it can deteriorate and destroy the foundation of your home. You need to make sure that any entry into your home is cleared by a professional fire company prior to entering the premises. There is also a risk of a fire restarting, even if it appears to be completely out.

2. Make a Few Calls
Informing family and other loved ones of the fire, and your safety status is one of the most important parts of fire damage restoration. Material items can be replaced, but your family's peace of mind is important. Next, call your insurance company. Many companies cover fire damage restoration if you have suffered from home fire or a fire in business.

3. Fire Report
Obtaining a copy of the fire report is also crucial in the early stages after you experience a fire in home or fire in business. Your local fire agency can help you obtain a copy of the report, and if they can't release it to you they will instruct you on where to obtain a copy. The fire report will include the home's condition, persons involved, and other important information required by both your insurance company and the restoration company who comes in to help clean up the damage and board up the house.

4. Securing the Property
Whether you experience home or commercial fire damage, many insurance companies mandate that you board up the area. A restoration company can assist you with this to make sure that you are safe throughout the process. If your utilities are unsafe, the fire department will make sure they are turned off before they leave the area. It is important to not turn them on after they have been shut off!

5. Replace Documents
Whether the documents have suffered smoke damage, soot damage, or been destroyed entirely, it is important to replace them. This should be done before the fire cleanup so you have time to start the process of replacing them. You should also be sure to replace any damaged credit cards after you cancel them. Don't forget the social security cards, birth certificates, or driver's licenses that haven't been damaged by the fire.

6. Begin Cleanup
This process is where you will want to make sure to hire a professional restoration company. It is never advisable to try and remedy the damage that occurs from a fire in home or fire in business because it is dangerous and a complicated process to remove the smoke smell, smoke damage, and fire damage. Fire damage restoration companies will help you board up the house or, in the event that there is commercial fire damage, board up the business as well. Fire cleanup usually includes getting rid of smoke damage, smoke smell, soot damage, and fire damage.

Whether you have suffered a fire in home or fire in business, it is important to always leave the damage control to the professionals. Fire cleanup with residential or commercial fire damage can be complicated and tricky, and getting it done right the first time is crucial. Give us a call at 425-775-5723.

Water Damage Restoration Methods

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

Water is one of the most destructive substances in the indoor environment. Excess flooding or moisture can cause rapid deterioration of structures and personal properties. In that case, water damage can be more dangerous when the water cleanup services are postponed. Also, the destructive effects of water can be sharply reduced by the effective intervention of a restoration professional such as SERVPRO of Edmonds within the first 48 hours. Although water damage can be severe, restoration and water cleanup can still produce amazing results.

Water is an important substance to homes and businesses. Businesses and homes cannot survive without water. However, water in home or water in business can be a mess and is often caused by the following factors:

  • Leaking or bursting pipes.
    • Faulty household appliances.
    • Natural disasters such as storms and other weather-related problems.
    • HVAC issues.
    • Faulty plumbing systems.
    • Problems with water in home or water in business are also caused by basement humidity and sewer back up, which is invaded by the clogged drain lines and tree roots.
    • Flash Flooding

What to do when you experience a flooded home:

Normally, more than 80% of the disasters that are handled by a restoration company or mitigation experts include flood damage, supply line break, pipe break, and storms. Addressing the issues with water in business or water in home should be faster because it is one of the critical ways of securing the structures of your personal properties. Therefore, the following are the various steps to consider when dealing with a flooded home:
• The excess water should be removed by mopping, blotting, and drying.
• The process of water cleanup should be carried out after you have removed items such as lamps, jewelry, and electronics.
• In the case of a supply line break or pipe break, switch off the main water line.
• If you happened to experience a flooded home during the summer, turn on the air conditioning systems for maximum drying.
• Before the water cleanup or water damage mitigation, art objects should be moved to a safe and dry place.
• After the water cleanup, inspect on what caused the pipe break or supply line break.
• During water damage restoration, you should remove colored mats from wet carpets.
• Drying of a flooded home should start when you have already switched off the main power supply. Also, mitigation and restoration experts recommend that you turn off the main gas supply during the water cleanup.
• Before deciding on the drying method to use for the emergency mitigation, it is imperative that you consulted with a trained and licensed professional
• You can also take photos and documentation of items and structures that are affected by the flood damage. The pictures and documentation can then be presented to a restoration company, which will give you a proper directive regarding the type of claim to pursue. There are two types of claims, water damage claim, and flood damage claim.

Things not to do after experiencing problems with water in home or water in business:

• Do not use the household vacuum for water removal during the restoration process.
• Do not turn on ceiling fixtures when the ceiling is wet. You should also avoid the rooms that have sagging ceilings.
• Do not leave magazines or books on a wet floor after the damage restoration.
• Do not fix electrical appliances or electrical sockets if you are not sure of the procedure to follow.

You may be surprised to know that your electronic items that have been damaged by water can be treated by disaster restoration professionals. Some may be too far gone to restore, especially if you’ve attempted to activate or turn on any electronic device you suspect may have been damaged by water. Content cleaning professionals can coordinate the treatment of computers, televisions, DVD players, and more. Taking prompt action in these instances is the key to successfully restoring these items, so be sure to include them on your list of damaged items.

3. Move Outs

If an entire room’s worth of belongings has been damaged by water, SERVPRO of Edmonds professionals will often coordinate a move-out of the items in the affected area. This will greatly improve the efficiency and organization of the restoration process, both for the affected belongings and the room itself. We store and clean contents at our warehouse facility in Lynnwood, WA.

Guidelines on How to Deal with a Fire in the Home or Business

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

There are a few losses that are more devastating than seeing one’s home or business premises getting consumed in fire damage. When such a thing happens, one needs to have a clear action plan to help them restore the building. To achieve this, you need the help of competent commercial fire damage restoration experts such as the professionals at SERVPRO of Edmonds. Below are some tips and guidelines that can help you deal with fire restoration.

Common types of fire

The cause of the fire is what determines how fire restoration will be done. The cause also determines the fire restoration processes which will have to be put in used to bring the building back to the state it was in before the damage.

• Protein fire: This is the type of fire which happens when food from the oven or stove has overcooked and burned. The odor left behind by this type of fire is strong and can make the house almost unbearable to live in. The soot damage and smoke damage from this type of fire are also very extensive.

• Complex fire: This happens when a variety of natural and artificial items have burned inside the house. This mixture leaves behind thick black smoke damage all over the house. When doing fire restoration to such a house, the commercial fire damage company will have to do corrosion mitigation to protect certain surfaces from further damage.

• Natural fire: if the origin of the fire is shrubs, trees or other vegetation on the outside, a lot of smoke damage, soot damage and odor will be left in the house and deodorization will be necessary.

• Malfunctioning of the furnace: if the furnace or any other gas or electrical appliance malfunctions, an electrical fire will result. An electrical fire or utility room fire could cause destruction all over the house and a lot of smoke damage.

There are a few things that owners should understand about commercial fire damage before they start the restoration process. First, when smoke and ash are left behind they will continue to cause damage and corrosion to different surfaces in the home. When the fire has a lot of soot, the walls and ceiling can take a few minutes to get complete soot damage. Only professionals should handle this work.

Another important thing to note is that smoke causes the glass to etch after a very short time. Then, if the firefighter or fire truck is going to use a fire sprinkler system or fire hose for fire suppression, the home will end up with two problems, water damage, and commercial fire damage. Both problems can be fixed by a competent fire sprinkler system damage restoration expert.

When the fire damage restoration experts get to your home, they may observe the following things;

• Identification of the cause of the electrical fire or utility room fire
• Evaluation of the areas which were left wet as a result of fire sprinkler system or fire hoses water
• Removing water left behind by the firefighter, fire sprinkler system, fire hose, and the fire truck
• Evaluating the areas affected by smoke damage and soot damage
• Removing the contents of the home
• Performing fire restoration

SERVPRO of Edmonds will respond in time and ensure that all the damage resulting from the fire is remedied. They will also ensure that the structural strength of the house is restored after the damage.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Safety Precautions

2/28/2020 (Permalink)

Here at SERVORO of Edmonds we have learned to expect the unexpected. No one plans to a kitchen fire, a toilet overflow or flooded crawl space, but ‘surprise!’ – it happens every day. While lighting and thunder in the Pacific Northwest is not as prevalent as some other regions it can certainly happen which is why we should always be prepared to make the right choices when we could be at risk during a storm.

Although the odds of being struck by lightning are less than one in 1,000,000 some factors can put you at greater risk. People who work outside or engage in outdoor recreational activities are more susceptible. Imagine you are going on a hike in the woods, rafting on a river or golfing; would you know what to do if lightning struck? What if you work on utility poles, for the forest service or in sewer lines; does your company follow proper precautions and safety guidelines? Regional and seasonal differences can heighten or lower the risk of getting injured by lightning.

In 2018 Florida and Tennessee had the most lightning related deaths and Florida is considered the worst with over 2,000 injuries in the past 50 years. During 2006-2018 lightning caused an average of 30 deaths per year in the United States.

You can protect yourself from risk by taking the following precautions;

  • If weather forecast calls for thunderstorms postpone your trip or activity
  • “When thunder roars go indoors” – Find a safe, enclosed shelter
  • Suspend activity for atm least 30 minutes after the last ‘clap’ of lightning to be sure it has passed
  • If no shelter is available crouch low with as little of your body touching the ground as possible. Lightning causes electrical currents on the top of the ground which can be deadly up to 100 feet away.

If your home or business retains structure damage from lightning call SERVPRO of Edmonds to help you clean up and repair the aftermath; we can be reached at 425-775-5723. For more emergency about preparedness follow our Facebook page for tips here.

Protect Your Property From Rainstorm Damage

2/21/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Edmonds provides tips to building owners and facility managers about important steps to take to maintain landscape and property investment during heavy rains. It is not uncommon for our Project Managers to run across flooding and groundwater intrusion on a daily basis. Make sure you review your insurance policy to know what is included and excluded from coverage.

Exercise proper drainage to prevent water intrusion and water damage in commercial and residential structures. Appropriate storm water management is necessary to help prevent flooding, erosion, and structural property damage, which can lead to costly repairs. Landscape Management professionals suggests facility managers use these tips to safeguard their landscaping efforts and property security in the event of heavy rain and floods:

  • Maintain storm drains and keep catch basins free of trash, sediment, roots, and plant debris to allow for water to flow through drains instead of pooling around them. Installing straw wattles and/or rock borders around drains and V-ditches can help prevent sediment build up in drains.
  • Keep brow ditches and V-ditches free of debris by regularly clearing drain outlets and weep-holes of sediment. Over-irrigation during dry times can cause erosion and sediment and chemicals can build up.
  • The most environmentally dangerous time for a property is during initial construction while land is being cleared and graded. To protect these areas during heavy rainfall, install a silt fence or straw wattle around drains to create flow channels for storm water to drain.
  • If landscape drains are clogged, contact a landscape management company as soon as possible to review the drainage issues and remove trapped sediment and debris to allow for rainwater to drain appropriately.

Western Washington Wildfire Risk

7/10/2019 (Permalink)

Western Washington unfortunately faces elevated wildfire risk in 2019

The Pacific Northwest has suffered its fair share of fires over the past several years, many of which SERVPRO came to the rescue of. In Washington State last year (2018), there were 1,744 fires that affected nearly 439,000 acres, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. Of those, 1,457 were human-caused, accounting for nearly 280,000 of the acres that burned.

Many of us ask; what causes these fires? The answer is surprising: People! Keep in mind safety when smoking, lighting fireworks and campfires especially in dry areas. The majority of wildfires are caused by burn piles that get out of hand- pay attention to what laws your county has in place about burning. Our dying forests and diseased trees are the perfect breeding ground for fire and have intensified the wildfire season. Our rapidly dying forests are largely due to disease and pests, which take advantage of trees stressed by a lack of water.

Western Washington, including the Puget Sound, will have a higher risk of fires; much of the risk in Eastern Washington remains average. March 2019 produced 51 fires alone, many of them in Cowlitz and Lewis counties.

The DNR is asking the state Legislature for $55 million for wildfire response and forest health management which would nearly double the amount of full-time firefighters.

Here are some interesting facts about wildfires to keep in mind;

  • 90% of all wildfires are started by humans
  • “Crown fires” are spread by wind moving quickly across the tops of trees
  • Weather conditions can directly contribute to the occurrence of wildfires through lightning strikes or indirectly by an extended dry spell or drought
  • An average of 1.2 million acres of US woodland burn every year
  • A large wildfire — or conflagration — is capable of modifying the local weather conditions

Tips To Reduce Moisture Problems Leading To Mold

6/20/2019 (Permalink)

Tips To Reduce Mold:

A moisture problem in your space can quickly turn into a mold cleanup problem. Mold grows best in damp conditions, and as it is airborne, it spreads easily. Spores grow and bloom into colonies, and those colonies can permanently alter the aesthetics of a space, in addition to releasing dangerous bacteria into the air.

Whether your moisture problem is from a leaky connection, a busted pipe, or flood conditions, turning off your water can only help to dry out your space. Moving water is always in danger of being deposited in the wrong place, and damp conditions are ideal for mold growth. Keep the problem isolated as long as possible by turning off your water at the main connection to avoid spreading the spores throughout the property, making mold cleanup easier.

Call a Professional

Mold spores cannot be completely removed from a space, because they’re airborne. However, a qualified professional can mitigate that mold growth to keep it at a normal level. They’ll use specialized equipment like dehumidifiers to remove the growth conditions and air filtration devices to remove the excess spores from the air.

Your moisture problem doesn’t have to lead to a black mold infestation; mold cleanup requires just a few special steps to isolate and mitigate the issue. Visit http://www.SERVPROedmonds.com for more information on mold.

Frozen Pipes? Call the SERVPRO of Edmonds Team!

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

Severe winter weather ranks third as a cause of insured catastrophic losses, after hurricanes and tornadoes, according to the Insurance Information Institute.  Losses from snow, ice, and freezing temperatures across the United States average about $1.2 billion a year, according to the New York Times.

Preparing your home for cold weather can help avoid potentially costly problems, like frozen pipes.  When water freezes it expands.  That's why a can of soda explodes if you put it into a freezer to chill quickly and forget it.  When water freezes in a pipe, it expands the same way.  If the water expands enough, the pipe bursts, water escapes, and major damage can begin.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

So what can you do to avoid frozen pipes?  First, make sure your heating system is working properly and that vulnerable pipes, like those that run close to your exterior walls, are insulated.

If you go away for several days in the winter, make sure you leave the heat on.  The Insurance Information Institute recommends setting your thermostat at 65 degrees.

Have someone check your home and property, if you can.  If you expect to be away for extended periods - say, you go South for the winter - have your water turned off.

Other actions you can take to help prevent your pipes from freezing are:

  • Seal air leaks surrounding or near your pipes
  • Keep your garage doors closed if you have water supply lines in the garage.
  • Disconnect all outdoor hoses and turn off water to exterior faucets and sprinkler systems.
  • Open your kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • Keep your heat at a minimum of 55 degrees at all times.  Keep it at 65 when you're out of town.
  • During severe cold turn on both hot and cold faucets near outside walls to allow a small trickle of water to run during the night.
  • Remove your outside hoses and store them inside during the winter.
  • If you need to be away from home, consider draining your water system before you go.
  • Identify the locations of shut-off valves so that you're prepared to stop the flow of water as soon as possible when a pipe bursts.

If a pipe bursts:

  • Shut off water at the main valve. Your shut-off should be easily marked with a tag. Call SERVPRO of Edmonds if you would like one.
  • If the break is in a hot water pipe, the valve on top of the water heater should be closed.
  • Call a professional restoration expert such as SERVPRO of Edmonds to mitigate the damage. Keep an emergency number nearby for quick access!

Thanksgiving Cautions: Dangers to Consider before Deep Frying Your Turkey

11/8/2018 (Permalink)

Serving a deep fried turkey on Thanksgiving has grown in popularity over the years as people experiment more in their kitchens. While it may be a mouth-watering option is the risk truly worth it? Many of you may have seen the numerous videos of turkey fryer explosions and fires publicized online. Don’t run the risk of property damage or injury – make sure you take the proper precautions when menu planning this season; especially if you are taking on a deep fried turkey.

  • Turkey Fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area. Consider placement of the fryer, is it flat, sturdy, out of reach from children?
  • An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill when the turkey is put in and a frozen or partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter (sometimes with great force) when put in the pot
  • Even a small amount of cooking oil spilt on a hot burner can cause a considerable flame or fire
  • Without thermostat controls some turkey fryers can overheat oil to the point of starting a fire. Make sure it’s not too hot.
  • The sides of the cooking pot, lid and handles can get dangerously hot. Protect you hands when maneuvering to prevent injury or spillage

Your friends at SERVPRO of Edmonds wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and remind you to stay safe. Remember, our team is on call 24/7 365 days a year, no matter what holiday or time of night. If you experience a fire SERVPRO of Edmonds will come to your rescue, don’t hesitate to call 425-775-5723.

Halloween Safety Tips in Edmonds, WA

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

The Edmonds Community becomes alive in fall with the crunch of leaves and vibrant colors that come alive throughout the quaint downtown. Many Edmonds homeowners and businesses decorate their space to reflect the festivities of the season and anticipate the trick-or-treating crowds. Keep in mind some of these Halloween safety tips as you venture out for an evening of fun in Edmonds.

  1. Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
  2. When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant
  3. If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child or even adult may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
  4. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.
  5. Small children should never carve pumpkins to avoid unwanted cuts. Encourage children can draw a face with markers and have parents do the slicing.
  6. Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin- they can be fire hazards. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest as does not tip easily.
  7. Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and not on a porch or any path where visitors may pass close by. They should never be left unattended

Have a safe and happy Halloween and call us in case of an emergency at 425-775-5723.
